Occupational Health & Safety Speakers Series (April 23 - 27)

The Occupational Health & Safety Certificate Program at the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension is pleased to present our 2012 Speakers Series, set for April 23 - 27, 2012.  All four lectures will take place at Enterprise Square (10230 Jasper Ave.) and will run over the lunch hour, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm.

This year's lectures are:

  • Monday, April 23, 2012 -- Managing Fatigue: The New Pathway (Dr. Don McInychuk). This session will help attendees to define and identify the causes of fatigue, describe the workings of your "body clock", understand the stages of sleep, and implement a healthy lifestyle management plan that will help reduce fatigue. (RSVP)
  • Tuesday, April 24, 2012 -- Canada's 'Rogue Nation' Position on Asbestos: industry-government influence on policy (Dr. Colin Soskolne). Epidemiology is the applied science that informs rational policy formulation.  As professionals whose role it is to serve the public interest, vested interests must not distort the facts and motivate policy on ideological grounds rather than on what the data can support.  When it comes to the mining and export of asbestos out of Quebec, however, the Canadian government has significantly failed its citizens.  Come learn both how this has happened, and why it must not continue. (RSVP)
  • Wednesday, April 25, 2012 -- Issues in Recognizing Occupational Disease (Dr. Jeremy Beach). There are significant deficiencies in the recognition, management and prevention of work-related asthma, despite it being a very common problem. This session will highlight the most common issues in recognizing Occupational Disease. (RSVP)
  • Thursday, April 26, 2012 -- Lighten Up! The 'Four Fs' to a safe and healthy work environment (Dr. Billy Strean).  Occupational Health and Safety depends on many factors. This session will begin with an overview of "The Exhilarated Model", which shows how feeling, fuel, focus, the field (of conversations), and front-runners interact to create the optimal workplace.. (RVSP)
  • Friday, April 27, 2012 -- NAOSH Speakers Conference & Trade Show.  For more information on this conference - or to register - visit http://www.edmontoncsse.org/.

Space is limited for each of these sessions, so please be sure to RSVP early and reserve your seat.  Also, If you are interested in attending multiple sessions, you must RSVP seperately for each session you plan to attend.  We hope to see you there!

Dr. Francescutti's "Humanity of It All" Lecture Draws Capacity Crowd

Even after a venue change to accommodate more guests, the room was filled to capacity with a crowd anxious to hear Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti deliver his highly regarded The Humanity of It All lecture.

His message?

“Think smart.  Be safe.  Enjoy life.”

As part of the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension’s Knowledge at Noon series, “Dr. Lou” delivered the presentation with confidence, candor, and heavy dose of humour.   Relying heavily upon audience participation, Dr. Francescutti made it a point to challenge many of the common beliefs and perceptions that our society has come to accept, and explore if there are better alternatives we can choose.

Dr. Francescutti’s presentation – sponsored by the Occupational Health& Safety Certificate Program – lasted approximately 35-minutes, and after the lecture, he took questions from the audience.  Dr. Lou hopes to eventually turn this lecture into a TED talk, and welcomes feedback from all in attendance.

The final Knowledge at Noon lecture of the 2010-2011 academic year – titled “From Farm to Fridge” -- will take place on May 18th at Enterprise Square.
